Welcome to the World of Shakespeare
In the “Simply Shakespeare” unit students learn about the life of Shakespeare, the time period in which he lived, and the works for which he is famous. They pursue independent research topics that reflect the lifestyles of people who lived during the Elizabethan Era. Students then develop and perform original scenes in which they incorporate events that took place during Shakespeare’s time period as well as some of his words and phrases into their characters’ dialogue. They will then study the format/structure of Shakespeare’s plays. Students then read from selected comedies and tragedies written by William Shakespeare and become familiar with the language, characters and plot lines. Students in each group study one of these comedies or tragedies in detail and then perform various scenes of the play for an audience. This culminating activity takes place in conjunction with a partnership with Salisbury University’s Bobbi Biron Theatre Program. Students participate in “Acting Shakespeare” workshops conducted by Robert Smith, Professor and Co-Chair of the Department of Theater and Dance, who also arranges for students to tour the university’s Black Box Theatre and participate in behind-the-scenes sessions with the technical director and costume designers of the costuming and scenery shops.
